Our primary aim is to create a safe, healthy, and positive learning environment for all students. The school clinic is permanently staffed by three full-time nurses during school hours who provide first aid, emergency care, health education, and ongoing medical support in accordance with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and Ministry of Education (MOE) guidelines.
Health Files and Confidentiality
- Mandatory Records: All students must have a completed Student Health File submitted upon admission, including a medical history, parental signatures, and a copy of their vaccination card.
- Updates: Parents must provide updated medical reports for any chronic diseases. Please inform the clinic immediately of any changes to your child’s health or emergency contact details.
- Confidentiality: All medical records are kept strictly confidential and will only be shared with necessary school personnel or authorities (MOH/MOE) with permission or as required by law.
Sickness and Infection Control Policy
To protect our school community, we strictly follow MOE/MOH infection prevention guidelines:
- When to Stay Home: Students who are clinically unwell, vomiting, or have a fever of 37.5°C or higher must be collected by a parent.
- The 24-Hour Rule: Students must remain at home and be fever-free for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medication) before returning to school.
- Infectious Diseases: Parents must inform the school if a child has a contagious illness. Suspected cases at school will be safely cared for in our designated Isolation Room until a parent arrives. A doctor’s “fit to return” letter is required before the student can come back to class.
- Post-Hospitalization: Students returning from surgery or a significant hospital stay must provide a doctor’s letter detailing any required restrictions to school activities.
Medication Policy
We have strict procedures to ensure the safe administration of medication at school:
- Storage and Administration: All medication must be delivered to the school nurse by a parent/guardian—do not send it with the student or leave it with a teacher. All medication is stored and administered in the clinic.
- Packaging: Medicines must be in their original packaging, clearly labeled with the doctor’s prescription, dosage times, student name, and expiration date.
- Over-the-Counter (OTC): OTC medications (like Paracetamol) require written parental consent detailing dosage and administration time.
- Exceptions: High school diabetic students may carry and self-administer insulin. Asthma inhalers may also be kept with the student as needed.
Chronic Conditions & High-Risk Students
Students with chronic medical conditions (e.g., diabetes, severe asthma, epilepsy, heart conditions) are placed on a Medical Alert List to ensure staff are aware and prepared.
- Diabetic Care: We have a comprehensive Diabetic Protocol for identifying and treating hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. Diabetic students are encouraged to carry a testing kit and an emergency glucose snack/drink at all times.
Accidents and Emergencies
- Immediate Contact: In the event of an accident or emergency, the school nurse will immediately notify the parents. All incidents are logged in our Digital Campus System.
- Hospital Transfers: If an injury or illness is deemed serious, the student will be transferred to BDF Hospital, and parents will be contacted to meet them there.
- Emergency Preparedness: The school has a comprehensive Emergency Crisis Manual with specific response plans for severe weather, earthquakes, fire alarms, bomb threats, and violent incidents. First aid kits and emergency student lists are mobilized during any evacuation.
Safeguarding: We strictly adhere to the school’s Child Protection Policy. Any signs of physical or emotional abuse are immediately referred to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
Parents and School Staff should understand the risks and needs of individuals within the same community. Sensible health and safety management should be straightforward, it’s just part of a good school partnership with home.
