The Educational Support Unit (ESU) provides specialized academic and developmental support for students who require additional assistance to access the school curriculum successfully.
Students may be referred to the ESU if they have an identified learning difficulty, developmental need, or if school assessments indicate that additional educational support may be required. Placement within the ESU program is determined following a review of the student’s educational needs and supporting documentation.
Formal diagnoses of learning difficulties, developmental conditions, or special educational needs must be obtained through qualified external professionals or accredited medical and educational specialists. The school may request official reports or documentation from licensed providers to confirm the student’s needs and determine the appropriate level of support.
Within the ESU, students receive structured support in core academic subjects through small group instruction using adapted teaching strategies, multi-sensory learning approaches, and individualized targets. Students continue to follow the school curriculum; however, the content, pace, and expectations may be modified according to each student’s needs and current level of attainment.
Where appropriate, students may participate in selected mainstream classes such as ICT, Arts, Physical Education, and other non-core subjects. This approach promotes social inclusion, interaction with peers, and the development of independence while ensuring that students continue to receive the academic support they require.
Student progress is monitored throughout the academic year through ongoing assessments, classroom observations, and Individual Education Plans (IEPs). Based on progress and updated evaluations, the level of support may be adjusted, reduced, or discontinued when a student demonstrates readiness to transition to a more independent learning environment.
In certain cases, the school may recommend additional support, such as a shadow teacher, to assist the student in accessing lessons safely and effectively. When this support is deemed necessary, the school will discuss the arrangement with parents and provide guidance regarding the required provisions.
The ESU works collaboratively with parents, teachers, and specialists to ensure that every student receives the support necessary to develop academically, socially, and emotionally within a supportive learning environment.
